While speaking to Tom Simmons about the sound design, he encouraged me to have a closer look at the work by Czech animator Jiří Barta. As I had one of his films in my video-collection, I watched “Krysař” (The Pied Piper of Hamelin) again – with a focus on the sound. The absence of understandable dialogue as a sign of dehumanization of society and – on the contrary – silence and counter balance , is a quite remarkable part of the sound-design. In addition to that – especially at the beginning of the film, the soundtrack is an acoustic mixture of various clocks and gears in combination with the monotonous activities and operations of the townsmen, a sign for the inflexibility and the inescapable fate of Hameln. Creating a kind of melody or sound-opus with the different sounds of the machines and the working processes, is a very interesting idea. Probably the sound within the Industrial Palace is doing the same, just by playing together. Here are some facts about this film…
