Meeting 004 // 9th March 2009 // Tutorial with Tom Simmons
This time, David an I, we had a tutorial with Tom Simmons. During this meeting, we could show the first draft sound-file to him in combination with the animation of the brain – as a kind of depiction of the progress and the development of the collaboration, as well as an impression of the style for the up-coming sound-design in general.
Talking to Tom about the sound and our ways of approaching this task was kind helpful and inspiring. And I think it was good for David as well to join this tutorial. Tom was rather content and encouraged us to keep going like this. Concerning the sound and the layout-mp3 for the brain-section, we all are of the opinion that the way David started to work is definitely a good one. The idea of creating the mood or kind of acoustic character of the 20’s and the general idea of a big machine-like apparatus is quite traceable and recognizable.
Again, we talked about the questions of publication and sound-installation. David is going to produce the files with stereo-layers, although or you can because I am not sure yet, what kind of sound-system I am going to use. On the one hand, there will be technical limits caused by the Flash-application and the compression with the help of Flash-Videos. On the other hand, I still think about using a mono-layered, more or less old-fashioned sound-box for the cabinet. And of course, it also depends on how the material of the cabinet (the kind of wood or whatever) is dealing with the sound, reacting to the vibrations of the sound-layer.
After the meeting, I talked to David and we decided that the idea of a sound-moodboard (suggested in my last group-critique on Thursday, 5th) is a really good idea in general, but in this case – as the time is just too short to create something like this – we agreed to go on like the way we already did. David is working based on my rather brief description for this whole project, by using the sound-scripts and by talking and discussing the results with me within these meetings.
I am looking to hearing the next series of sounds, because it is a really nice moment, when there is suddenly a sound-layer next to the animated images.
